Washington, D.C., United States (AHN) – In an attempt to prevent President Barack Obama’s plan to bring terror suspects to the United States for trial, the House voted 212-206 on Tuesday to curb the government’s expenses in the fiscal year. The measure targeted funds aimed at transferring inmates from a military holding facility in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, to prisons in the U.S.

The move hurts Obama’s efforts to close the controversial detention camp by next year or his attempts to transfer 9/11 mastermind Khalid Sheik Mohammed in America.

“None of the funds made available in this or any prior Act may be used to transfer, release, or assist in the transfer or release to or within the U.S., its territories, or possessions Khalid Sheikh Mohammed or any other detainee held at Guantanamo Bay as of June 24, 2009,” the bill explains.

The bill will be presented to the Senate for approval and would be sent to Obama to sign into law.

Upon assuming power in 2008, Obama had pledged to close down the notorious facility within a year but failed due to unyielding opposition from the U.S. Congress.

Currently, the prison, which is in Cuba’s Guantanamo naval base, holds nearly 170 detainees, including 58, who have been put into indefinite detention without trial.

Ankara, Turkey (AHN) – In an effort to help Israel control its continuing blaze, which has spread through northern parts of the country, Turkey has offered to put aside its differences and sent firefighting aircraft.

European nations such as Greece, Spain and Cyprus have also offered their help. The Turkish help came a day after fires raged in the Carmel mountains, killing 40 prison wardens, who were travelling in a bus, while on their way to the Damon Prison.

The local authorities had sent the wardens to evacuate nearly 500 prisoners from the facility. The facility is located near Kibbutz Beit Oren.

The bus in which they were travelling came in way of the fast moving flames, which has now spread to narrow mountain road that links Atlit and Kibbutz Bet Oren.

Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman sought assistance from Europe, Jordan and the United States to help them overcome blaze.

Jerusalem, Israel (AHN) – In an attempt to deal with the rising inflow of illegal African immigrants,the Israeli Cabinet on Sunday adopted a controversial measure to construct a detention center for migrants who enter the country from neighbor nation Egypt.

The center would be constructed in the southern Israeli desert where the migrants would be given food, shelter and basic health services until they were deported to their homeland.

Stressing the need to stop thousands of migrant workers, Israeli leader Benjamin Netanyahu said the influx could threaten Israeli jobs as well as the Jewish character of Israel as a state.

The prime minister went on to say that refugees from war-torn African nations such as Sudan would be granted unrestricted entry to Israel as in the past. However, officials claimed only 35,000 Africans were refugees and the remainder were treated as illegal economic migrants.

The plan has been criticized by human rights groups and social workers, who charge the facility would be similar to ghettoes the Nazis built for the Jews during World War II.

Israeli authorities claim the facility will not be a jail. “We aren’t jailing or distancing them,” Eyal Gabai, the director-general of Netanyahu’s office, told Al Jazeera. “They can have a good time, eat and drink.”

Washington, DC, United States (AHN) – A U.S. scientist has revealed North Korea’s newly-built uranium enrichment plant claiming he saw it during a visit last week to the communist country.

Siegfried Hecker of Stanford University said the facility at the Yongbyon nuclear complex outside the capital Pyongyang has 2,000 centrifuges made locally and modeled after Dutch and Japanese centrifuges, which produce low-grade enriched uranium to fuel a nuclear reactor.

Hecker said North Korean officials told him the plant was built in April 2009, when the country quit the nuclear disarmament talks with China, Japan, Russia, South Korea and the United States. The North Koreans claimed the plant produces electricity.

However, the American scientist said he did not know if the facility was operational.

The revival of Pyongyang’s nuclear program comes as the six-country nuclear disarmament talks are to resume. Analysts say the facility will give North Korea a bargaining chip in the talks.
