Riyadh, Saudi Arabia (AHN) – If French agencies are to be believed, ousted Tunisian leader Zine al-Abidine Ben Ali, 74, is in coma in a Saudi Arabian hospital after suffering a stroke two days ago.
His condition is said to be serious. Ben Ali decided to flee Tunisia on January 14 – a move that spread the mood of uprising in the Arab world.
Egypt followed Tunisia’s footsteps and ousted its president Hosni Mubarak earlier this month, while Bahrain and Yemen were also demanding a change in regime. According to French expert on Tunisia Nicolas Beau, Ben Ali, who had never allowed newspapers to carry any other photo than the approved one with his dyed hair, had been admitted to a Saudi hospital under a false name amid security concerns.
Ben Ali had the obsession to present himself as healthy and young president to his nation. Tunisia’s interim president had reportedly been informed about the current state of Ben Ali soon after he suffered the stroke. Ben Ali’s wife Leila is apparently not with her husband and is believed to be in Libya.
